12 Days Until the New Year: Day 7-Activities

We have reached the final days of 2020. Many festivities have passed, while some are just starting. Leftovers are running low but still very appreciated after a long day. Regardless, there is one gift most people fail to acknowledge: time. Between shifts, after meals, even in the middle of the night there is time to spare that you can use for yourself. Some activities require significantly more time than others, but they all have the same goal in mind: taking a break. Life is hectic, especially now, which is why stepping away and thinking about yourself is so important. Here are some great hobbies to pick up in your spare time. Who knows, maybe one will change your whole mindset.


Many people along the years have found the value in having a small garden. Some like the aesthetic of it while others reap the benefits. Random patch of grass in your yard? Plant some tomatoes and make a fresh salad for the family. Both children and adults can benefit from caring for something and seeing the benefits over time.


Although time consuming, puzzles are a great way to stimulate the brain and get your mind off of work and worries. If you are looking for a closer connection to the puzzle, it could be nice to order a custom puzzle with a picture of a loved one. In my experience, a puzzle with a picture of a loved one is very special and can truly make a difference for someone while coping with a recent loss.

Arts and Crafts

There are stores dedicated to this, for good reason. Arts and crafts provide a creative outlet for people of all ages. A fun idea could be making party hats for the new year, even if it is a virtual event. I’ve recently taken on painting, and I’ve found that mixing the colors to match my moods is really comforting. Even if it looks wacky, which describes most of the things I made, it is truly a comforting and calm way to spend some free time.


There are many songs for many different occasions. If you find music helps you move through a rough patch, then maybe singing along can help. It can be fun, especially with family or friends, but it also provides a release from all the inner feelings. If you’re more in touch with your creative side, maybe you can sing some of your own musical creations.


A good book can take you to a new world or help you through a difficult situation. Many books address mental health and loss in creative ways, which can truly aid in someone’s journey. Even if you just read for pleasure, many of these books still carry important messages and themes that can help in the future.
